Politics & Controversy

In 2019, the players of the USWNT filed a lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation over claims that they had been systematically underpaid for years when compared with the U.S. men’s team. The gender discrimination suit came right before the US's win in the 2019 World Cup. After the game against the Netherlands, fans chants morphed from "USA, USA" to "Equal Pay, Equal Pay". The suit then follows a wave of success and failure, depsite fan support. A district court denied their motion, and subsequent appeal, but in the end reached a 24 million dollar settlement. The players not only recieved financial documentation, but written confimation of equality in treatment in the future.

Korbin Albert, player on the USWNT, was recently outed for liking and reposting anti-LGBTQ social media posts. The team has long supported the LGBTQ community, with many of its members and fans being apart of the community. Albert's posts created a sense of unease and discomfort between the players, and drew some confusion with her substitute posistion in the upcoming SheBelieves tournament. The United States Women's National Team Players Association (USWNTPA) issued a statement Tuesday in support of LGBTQIA+ rights. "The women's soccer community is one of joy, excitement, kindness and love. We have worked to ensure our community is safe, inclusive and welcoming to everyone. As allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community, those efforts will not stop,". "Across the country, human rights are being stripped away. LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. Trans rights are human rights," the statement continued. "Today and every day the USWNT Players will stand up for those rights."
